Throughout his campaign, Trump repeatedly promised to end the Ukraine conflict within “24 hours” if elected. He did not explain how he would do this, although he said he would use his “great relationship” with Putin and Ukrainian leader Vladimir Zelensky to negotiate a peace deal.
Trump spoke with Zelensky last week, and he told NBC News he would likely talk to Putin soon. Putin congratulated Trump on his election victory last Wednesday, telling reporters he was ready to talk to the president-elect.
While the Kremlin has repeatedly downplayed suggestions that Trump could end the conflict with Kiev, Putin said Trump’s comments on the issue “deserve more attention”.
It is unclear what goal Trump will put in the conflict. On the campaign trail, Vice President-elect JD Vance proposed a ceasefire, a demilitarized zone along the current 1,300-kilometre front, and accepting Ukraine as a member of NATO, the Wall Street Journal reports some shows in the past week support the interpretation and encourage the president- choose to give it to Zelensky and Putin.
Moscow believes that any settlement must begin when Ukraine ceases military operations and accepts the “regional reality” that it will never regain control of Donetsk, Lugansk, Kherson and Zaporozhy regions, as well as Crimea, The Kremlin insists in addition that it is those objectives of its military strategy – including In Ukraine neutrality, demilitarization and denazification – can be achieved.
