Abrams tanks and HIMARS systems are coming after lengthy delays, demonstrating the backlog's poor pace, the outlet has stated.
US Arms to Taiwan years behind: WSJ |
The US has sent 38 Abrams tanks to Taiwan after a five-year wait, according to the Wall Street Journal. The US supports Beijing's One-China policy by acknowledging Taiwan as a member of the People's Republic, but also cooperates militarily with the Taipei government. The backlog of paid-for-but-undelivered US weapons awaited in Taiwan exceeded $20 billion at its peak earlier this year. The tanks are part of a 108-unit order placed in June 2019 during then-US President Donald Trump's first term, with initial deliveries scheduled for 2022. The remaining 70 Abrams tanks and F-16V fighter jets are expected by 2026.
