India in talks with US to buy combat vehicles

This comes as Prime Minister Narendra Modi meets US President Donald Trump this week.

India, the world's largest arms importer, relies heavily on Russia.

Last month, Trump asked Modi, who is due in Washington on Wednesday for a two-day visit, to buy more U.S.-made security equipment and move “toward a fair trading relationship.”

India and the United States have long been in talks about jointly producing Stryker combat vehicles, which are made by General Dynamics and also used by the US military.

The two countries are also finalizing a contract to jointly produce fighter jet engines in India for the Indian Air Force, a deal agreed in 2023, according to two sources who asked not to be identified.

"We certainly hope to expedite the deal that we would like to conclude with the United States," India's Defence Production Minister Sanjiv Kumar told reporters on Sunday, adding that efforts were underway in this regard.

Officials from India's state-owned Hindustan Aeronautics Ltd. are due to meet in the coming weeks with U.S. officials and General Electric Co.'s aerospace unit, which makes the GE-414 engines, for talks to close the deal by March, the sources said.

Two other sources, who also spoke on condition of anonymity, said New Delhi had begun talks with the Trump administration on a plan to buy the Stryker vehicles after offering them to the Indian military late last year.

The plan is for India to acquire a few hundred Stryker vehicles with an anti-tank guided missile system, and then co-produce them through a state-owned company, the sources added.

It was not immediately clear whether the two potential deals would figure into the talks between Modi and Trump.

Trade, defence cooperation and technology are among the issues to be discussed, the Indian foreign ministry said.
